   2. How do I know if I’m required to file a Canadian personal tax return?

  • All Canadian residents are required to file a Canadian personal tax return

   3. What is the deadline to file my personal Canadian tax return?

​

  • April 30 if you are not self employed

  • June 15 if you are self employed

​

   4. How do I get my tax slips?

​

  • Tax slips will be mailed to you by your employer(s), financial institution(s), charitable institution(s), etc.

  • Tuition tax slips are found on your educational institution’s online portal

 

   5. What date should I expect to get my tax slips?

​

  • Taxpayers should expect to receive by mail or online their tax slips by the end of March

​

   6. What should I do if I have not received my tax slips?
 

  • Contact your employer(s), financial institution(s), charitable institution(s), etc.

  • Contact the Canada Revenue Agency

   7. What medical expenses can I claim?

​

   8. What documents do I need to claim medical expenses?

​

  • Medical expenses receipts will be needed

  • In some cases a prescription, certification or T2201 may be needed

 

    9. What do I need to claim employment expenses (including car expenses, home office expenses, etc.)?

​

  • A signed T2200 from your employer

  • Receipts of the expenses

 

  10. What is the maximum amount that I can contribute to my RRSP this year?

​

  • It is located on the previous year’s Notice of Assessment send to you by Canada Revenue Agency

​

  11. What should I do if I want to know the status of my refund?

​

  • Contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA):

  13. How long should I keep my tax slips and receipts after filing my personal tax return?

  • Keep all supporting documents for your personal tax return for 6 years after filing

​

  14. What should I do if I have not filed my personal Canadian tax return for multiple years?

​

  • Start filing them one by one in the order of the year that you are the most late for to the most recent year
